Marriage as defined by The American Heritage College dictionary is the legal union between a man and a woman as husband and wife. The Random House Unabridged dictionary defines marriage as the social institution under which a man and a woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc. These two dictionaries share the same fact, marriage is between a man and a woman. If that is the case, the debate on whether gay people should be able to marry, should not exist at all. The dictionary specifically states that marriage is between a man and a woman. Then why all of the controversy about gay marriage? Anyone who thinks twice about gay marriage should just read and dictionary and shut up, right? No, there is so much more to the issue than just what the dictionary says. When two people fall in love, they sometimes decide to get married. Usually they can do this with no problem, well, unless they're gay. American people have this weird phobia of gay marriage. It's not all Americans, but most of them. Well, the ones that "matter" anyway. What I mean by this, is that the people who can legalize gay marriage and make it OK for them to get married, are against it. Probably the most important American there is, President Bush doesn't even support gay marriage. So it seems that there is no hope for gay marriage, but I feel that there is. To me gay marriage is not that big of an issue. I don't understand why anyone would want to prevent a couple from proclaiming their love for one another. Marriage can be a good thing, but it brings trying times. Why shouldn't gay people be able to go through those same trying times? All the joys and pains that marriage can bring, gay people should be able to experience too. After all, they are human.
I think the biggest misconception about gay people is that they are not human or they are really different from us. The only thing that is different about them is that they choose to love people of the same sex as them. I don't think that that is an inhumane quality. Gay people are still human. They still eat, sleep, and breath the same was as straight people. They still have feelings and should be treated the same way as other people. That is why they should be able to get married.
Despite all of the reasons that are used to oppose gay marriage such as not being able to produce children, it is a sin, and that it will make marriage become less meaningful. This is all preposterous in my opinion because they can all be worked around. I think those are just excuses and don't really mean anything to the issue.
I am an obvious supporter of gay marriage because I believe that gay people should be able to enjoy the joys in life because they are still human and it doesn't matter what kind of sexual orientation they define themselves as, people are people and they should all be treated the same.
